All too often we don’t realize where our early signs of aging come from! Many tend to think it comes from passed along genetics, or just being pure unlucky! Most of the time it comes from the foods we consume as we grow up. But things like alcohol can destroy these lipids and keep your skin dry. There are many other naturally occurring things that our skin produces, such as keratin, collagen, elastin and many others! However, the foods we consume can cause these to put a halt on the production of these!

Sweets: Too much sugar can start the process of glycation. When you tend to eat more sugar than your cells can process, those excess molecules combine with proteins, creating “advanced glycation end products”. This process damages your skin’s collagen, which keeps your skin firm and youthful.

Alcohol: There’s a direct correlation between your skin and your liver. If toxins from alcohol aren’t broken down properly in your liver, you skin can develop a variety of issues, like sallowness, acne and wrinkles. Secondly, alcohol is known to dehydrate you and is terrible for your sleep. Inadequate sleep patterns often lead to wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and reduced skin elasticity.

Salty Foods: This may be a tough one to avoid because so many foods we consume contain sodium. But sodium can cause you to retain water and cause a “puffy” look. Processed Meats: Many processed meats contain sulfites and other preservatives that can trigger inflammation in your skin, which tends to accelerate aging.

Spicy Foods: These types of foods can aggravate rosacea prone skin. During menopause as well, blood vessels are believed to be more reactive which can cause your skin to look blotchy and less youthful. Puffiness and redness can either be short term or permanent depending on many factors.

Red Meats: Red meats or fatty meats generally generate free radicals, which tend to snag electrons from healthy cells, damaging them in the process. This ultimately affects your skin to protect itself and generate collagen.

Caffeinated Beverages: Caffeine is another way to dehydrate you skin by excreting the fluid from your body and depleting the skins need for moisture. If you’re feeling dry after a few cups of coffee, apply some moisturizer to your skin to give it back the moisture it needs.

Trans Fats: Another key suspect in promoting inflammation! This also means that your skin is more prone to UV damage, which is the number one cause of aging.

Most people don’t know how to read nutritional labels, so make sure you check with a local nutritionist who can teach you the best methods for reading them. Also, make sure you pay attention where and how your food was made. Is it organic? Did the grower use chemicals, such as pesticides? Lastly, don’t forget about the health of your skin because if not taken care of properly can cause damage down the road for yourself.
