Dark circles, or otherwise known as preorbital dark circles, are caused by tiredness or working too hard or even just staying up too late. However, even those might be true a lot of the reason can come from genetics. The preorbital dark circles are a result of the thin layer of skin below your eyes showing the blood vessels and the blood they contain more clearly than anywhere else on your body. The bluish circles that form under your eyes are just a result of light being reflected back off of the blood vessels sitting just below the surface of that extremely thin patch of skin.
What Are Some Remedies For Dark Circles?
There are some great and effective ways to getting rid of dark circles at home and without having to even step into a doctors office! Listed below are some natural and at home remedies to help you get rid of those dark under eye circles!
- Tomatoes – Combine a teaspoon of tomato juice and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix the two together and let it stay for a good 10 minutes before washing it off with cold water. Try and repeat this for two times a day. This is said to work because tomatoes contain lycopene, which is a phytochemical that is beneficial for skin. It has also been found to protect the skin from damage.
- Almond Oil – Almonds have been found to contain a high source of vitamin E. The oil can be used as am emollient to provide suppleness to the skin. Just apply a small amount to your under eyes and leave it on overnight and wash it off the next morning.
- Orange Juice – Combine a teaspoon of orange juice with a few drops of glycerin. Again, apply to the under eyes for about 10 minutes and wash off with cold water. Oranges are a good source of vitamin C and is known to conceal dark coloration.
- Grated Potatoes – All you need to do is grate a raw potato and extract the juice, soak two cotton balls in the juice and place the cotton balls in the juice. Leave the cotton balls under your eyes for 10 minutes and cleanse your face afterwards. Potatoes contain enzymes, starch and vitamin C, which are all known to nourish the skin around the eyes and help treat dark circles.
- Tea Bags – Use two tea bags and dip them in water and place them in the refrigerator for a while. Remove the bags from the fridge and place them over your eyes for about 15 min. Because these circles are caused by a dilation of blood vessels, green tea helps in reducing the dilation, thereby curing the under eye circles. It also contains tannins that have astringent properties that constrict the blood vessels and capillaries under the eyes and help reduce dark circles.
- Cucumber – This is a old way of reducing those under eye dark circles. Cut the the cucumber into thick slices and place them into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Take two slices out of the fridge and place them each on the eyes, ensuring they are completely covering the affected area. The cucumbers contain a number of antioxidants that help treat under eye dark circles.
- Mint Leaves – All you need are a few leaves, that are crushed and mix them with a few drops of water until you get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin and leave for 10 minutes, then wash with cold water. Mint is rich in vitamin C, which has the efficacy to treat dark circles and improve skin health.
- Cold Milk – Take a cotton ball and place on your eyes for about 15 minutes. The milk contains lactic acid that has shown to improve the smoothness, thickness and firmness of the skin. The acid also diminishes fine lines and wrinkles.
