Antioxidants come from a wide variety of fruits, plants and other naturally made ingredients. But did you know that they are vital to the health of your skin? They play a key role in slowing the impact of free-radical damage.  Each and every day, antioxidants are being studied for various health reasons because they play such an important role in not only keeping your skin looking youthful and healthy, but they also can have positive effects on other organs in your body! However, when it comes to your skin, the largest organ in our bodies, they are the single most thing that keeps your skin looking youthful.

Now as I mentioned, antioxidants work great to reverse and prevent free radical damage. What free radical damage does is causes collagen and other vital skin functions to completely break down! Ultimately, causing your skin to wrinkle, develop dark spots and other damaging signs. But by using a great skincare product that has high levels of antioxidants, this will work to interrupt free-radical damage and keep it from harming your skin once and for all!

What Foods Do Antioxidants Come From?

Red, Purple & Blue Grapes: Grapes are loaded with phytochemcials, which are a type of antioxidant that help protect against cancer. They also contain high levels of vitamin C and selenium.

Blueberries: Blueberries help to protect cells from damage and lower inflammation. They contain various vitamins and minerals as well.

Red Berries: Some great examples of these would be raspberries and strawberries that contain and acid called ellagic, which also works to protect you from cancer.

Nuts: Walnuts especially contain high levels of omega-3s, and Brazil nuts are known for their high level selenium. Other than that, most nuts contain a profile of minerals, and phytochemicals.

Dark Green Veggies: Like kale or spinach, these contain high levels of antioxidants to help dilate blood vessels and may have cancer-fighting properties.

Potatoes: White and Sweet potatoes contain important nutrients such as vitamins C and B6, potassium and fiber. However, sweet potatoes have higher level of these types of nutrients.

Tea: Tea helps to fight inflammation and works to block cell damage that can often lead to cancer. Green Tea in particular is popular with antioxidants as well.

Fish: Fish provide powerful omega-3 fatty acids, that help prevent inflammation. Most fish often contain vitamin D as well.

What Do Antioxidants Do For My Skin?

At a young age already, our skin is loaded with antioxidants, therefore giving us a youthful look. This helps to also protect our skin from the environment and sun damage. As we age though, our skin tends to lose out on these important nutrients that our body is able to naturally produce when we are young. Therefore, if you don’t receive enough protection those free-radicals will wreak havoc on your skin causing collagen to break down more quickly and ultimately not allowing our skin’s ability to heal.
